Ash encounters Brock for the first time

On arriving at Pewter City, Ash signs up for a Pokémon League Championship, but then learns that he must defeat eight Gym Leaders to qualify…

Right back at the start of Ash’s adventures with Pokémon, we see the hero along with Misty and his trusty Pikachu reaching the end of Viridian Forest and arriving in Pewter City. They head for the local Pokémon Center where Ash is surprised to see Nurse Joy. Although it turns out that it’s not the same nurse as in Viridian City, but her younger sister. Nurse Joy shows Ash a poster for the Pokémon League Championship and he immediately signs up, but then finds out that he must defeat eight Pokémon Gym Leaders first.

A guy called Flint is nearby and laughs at the thought of Ash defeating Brock – he’s the Gym Leader in Pewter City and is known to be tough! Eventually the two meet up, Ash fighting with Pikachu and Brock choosing Onix, but Pikachu is terrified of the giant rock snake! A fierce battle later and Ash has Brock defeated (thanks to a large dose of luck and a super-charged Pikachu!) and earns a Boulder Badge. Brock asks if he can join Ash on his Pokémon journey and the two become firm friends.
