The ‘Bat’ comes from the word ‘battle’ and the ‘trio’… well it’s the word ‘trio’, isn’t it? So ‘Battrio’… makes sense really. But what is the trio all about, eh? Well, this game is played with Pokémon pucks that players can collect. To send your Pokémon into battle you must place their puck on the game board, and three Pokémon are allowed to battle on your team at once.
So each player chooses a team of three Pokémon from their collection of Battrio pucks. There are 250 Pokémon available in all, split out into 14 expansion sets, plus there are special promotional pucks that are incredibly rare! The Pokémon take it in turns to battle with the opposition team, and you score Attack and Defense bonuses based on the way you arrange your Pokémon on the board, and for using type combinations.
There’s a Story Mode in Pokémon Battrio where you can choose your own character avatar and then explore a map, travelling around with your band of bruiser Pokémon. You get to battle against a wide range of characters and have battles with bosses, similar to the Gym Leaders in the regular Pokémon games. If you’re wondering what the gameplay is like, think Pokémon Battle Revolution on the Wii, or the Pokémon Stadium games, only with cel-shaded graphics and… pucks!
There’s no mistaking the Pokémon Battrio arcade machine in the downtown Tokyo arcades – the screen is shaped like a giant Poké Ball, as you can see at the top-right of this page. Please, please Mr Tomy, bring this machine over to the UK!
How to Play the Game…
You can buy pucks before you play, or pay for a game with the pucks you already own. You get to select your own avatar in the game, and this and your Pokémon’s stats can be saved to a special Memory Key and inserted to continue your game at a later date!

Winning battles in Pokémon Battrio will earn you PokéDollars that can then be spent on items to assist you in your next encounters. Players have found that purchasing one of the Battrio Memory Keys is essential, as without one of these you can’t save your PokéDollars, character choice, medals won and Pokémon’s progress to continue playing another day.

A game of Pokémon Battrio costs ¥100 per player, per game. That’s about 75p. Of course, that doesn’t include buying the Pokémon pucks in the first place. These are collected in a similar way to Pokémon Trading Cards, with new sets released all the time and some pucks much more rare than others. Without the Battrio game, the pucks make excellent Pokémon collector’s items on their own, with each of the Poké Ball-like pucks boasting some brilliant artwork.

I sent tomy an email and they said if 1 thousand people give a reason why they want battrio in their country then they will think about making it for Britain and America

My fave pokemon is rayquaza cause I love dragons an flying types and my face colour is green. I got my rayquaza when I was 7 and I was on holiday. We had ruby and our friend told us how to get him, but I defeated him so I started my game again and I caught him. Since then I have traded him onto all my games and he follows me around on heartgold

Well, Poke’mon is developed in Japan, so it makes sense that they have somethings we don’t in England!
Still, it would be pretty cool, if they developed some kind of portable games console for Battrio, where u enter a battrio puck (or 3) and use them!
