Over Before It’s Begun?

Dear Professor Yew,
It was my birthday last week, and I really wanted some Pokémon Trading Figure Game figures as I like the idea of playing this with my Pokémon-loving friend Harrison. When my mum tried at Toys R Us to get some, though, they had none in stock and the man in the shop told her that it wasn’t being made any more. Is this true? It’s only been out a short time. I am hoping you can shed some light on this for me as I think the game is cool.

The Pokémon Trading Figure Game is a strange one, Aaron. A brilliant game with high-quality figures of all the key Pokémon and collectability which we all love. Sadly it has failed to be marketed well anywhere in the world. There was a bit of a false start with Australia and the UK having early versions, then they tried again in America and finally Japan got a version in 2007, but none of this was accompanied by any major promotion in the Pokémon press (like us!). There were TV ads that were hardly ever on; the only way people found out about the game really was by word of mouth from Trading Card Game fans. We ran our own features on the game, but Pokémon Company has never sent us any or tried to promote the game with us. And now, we hear that the Pokémon Company has no plans to release any new versions of the game, so the guy in Toys R Us was right. You can still pick up the game, and many figures, from toy shops, though; just shop around a bit, or try online with eBay.

New WiiWare?

Dear Professor Yew,
I’m a big fan of My Pokémon Ranch on my Wii, but I was wondering why Nintendo hasn’t made more new Pokémon games for this fun format? I have the Virtual Console games Snap and Puzzle League, but they’re just old console games.

I was only thinking the same thing the other day, Eeve. Nintendo could make all kinds of cool mini-Pokémon games for us to enjoy on WiiWare, and get lots of cash in Wii points from us Wii gamers. Well… good news! There is a new Pokémon WiiWare game – it came out in Japan this month. It’s called Melee! Pokémon Scramble! and all we’ve got right now is a bunch of screenshots and the nugget of info that it’s a multiplayer Wii game with boss fights! We’ll bring
you more on this game next issue.

Sunyshore Shut!

Dear Professor Yew,
My brother got Pokémon Pearl two years ago and we have beaten all the Gym Leaders except for the one in Sunyshore City. We got to Valor Lakefront and we tried to go past a man at the side of the road, but he said Sunyshore City had a major blackout and he would not allow us to pass. We tried swimming past but the rocks blocked us. Do you know a way to get past him?

Ahh, that’s the guy that is stood on Route 222 I believe… of course I know how to do it, Edel! The problem you’ve got is that you haven’t beaten Cyrus and battled with Palkia yet. You need to get yourself to Mt. Coronet and complete this quest, then the lights will be back on in Sunyshore City. Good luck!

Plush Appeal!

Dear Professor Yew,
I am a massive Pokémon fan but I only have one thing missing from my
collection – a Pokémon plush toy. All my frends at school (who like Pokémon) have
millions of Pokémon plush. It’s really annoying! My question for you is… where can I find a Pokémon plush toy for about £2? Every Pokémon fan needs one and I haven’t got one. Please help. I live around Warwick so are there any Pokémon shops or online shops around here?

A plush Pokémon toy for £2 eh, Adam? That’s a tall order! The only place you will find one for that kind of money is at a car boot sale – there’s bound to be one near you, just check out your local paper. You can often find great Pokémon stuff from yesteryear at car boot sales really cheaply. I recently got an original Pikachu figure, still sealed in its box, for only 80p! The man who sold it to me said that he wanted £2 as didn’t I know Pokémon was going to be big again soon. I didn’t have the heart to tell him that I am actually Professor Yew and he can’t possibly know any more about Pokémon than I do! He, he!

Arrgghh It’s All Gone!

Dear Professor Yew,
Please could you help me? I have been playing Pokémon Diamond and got lots of Pokémon. But I suddenly cant get in and I get a message “the save file has been erased due to corruption or damage”. Is there anything I can do or is it all gone? Please can you help? I am so upset. I am using my mum’s email. She doesn’t understand but I am very, very sad.

Oh no! I’m really sorry Robin but the chance of you getting your save game data back is zero. It sounds to me like the battery back-up part of your Pokémon Diamond cartridge managed to get corrupted for some reason. Did you buy the game brand new, or second hand? Sometimes save game data becomes unreliable when a cartridge has been around for a while and not looked after by previous owners. At the end of the day it’s just a battery back-up, and we all know that batteries don’t last forever. If, however, you bought the game brand new, I would perhaps take it back and ask for a refund as this is a hardware problem on the cartridge. Perhaps you could change it for Pokémon Platinum instead; that would cheer you up. Sorry I can’t be of more help.
