Dear Professor Yew,
I have been playing LeafGreen for ages and have two questions. Where can I find Mew and how do I defeat the Elite Four?

Well William, the Elite Four are naturally tough – they represent the pinnacle of Pokémon training in the Kanto region, after all! If you’re having problems, take a look at your team. Try to keep it varied with plenty of different strengths and weaknesses, and make sure you level them all up to at least the mid-50s and all should be okay. Don’t forget to stock up on items, either. Use the time between fights to use these to heal your squad and you’ll have the upper hand on your quintet of rivals. As for Mew, he’s only available once you get an item called the Old Sea Map. It’s not in the game itself, but rather was given out by Nintendo at specific events.

A Bird In The Hand

Dear Professor Yew,
I have a few questions about Colosseum and LeafGreen.
1) I’ve beaten Realgam Tower and Mt Battle and purified every Shadow Pokémon but your guide says that this gets you a Ho-Oh. Can you tell me how to get it?
2) I have heard you can get Lugia in Colosseum. If this is true, how do I get my hands on it?
3) A previous issue of Pokémon World said an Aurora Ticket would come out this year so you can get Lugia, Ho-Oh and Deoxys – can you give me a release date for this?

Well Jonathan, here are your answers, young man!
1. All you’ll need do is head back to Mt Battle and your prize should await you at the top. You might have to redo the last ten fights in order to do this, but the reward is worth it.
2. Lugia is only obtainable in Pokémon XD on the GameCube.
3. The Aurora Ticket has already done the rounds.

Tower Of Strength

Dear Professor Yew,
I’m really stuck on Pokémon Ruby. I’ve been playing it for a long time and I just can’t seem to find the Sky Pillar. Is there any way you can please help? I hope to hear from you soon!

You’re not alone in your lengthy hunt for the Sky Pillar – every month I get a stack of letters as high as the tower itself from similarly lost Trainers! Fly over to Pacifidlog and take a surf to the right as if you were off hunting for Mirage Island. Stick close to the rocks at the top of the screen and, eventually, you’ll find a route to go up a little further through a rocky sea pass where you’ll find the legendary tower. Be warned, though – you’ll need the Mach Bike to traverse the crumbling floors inside!

Train In Vain

Dear Professor Yew,
I have a copy of Pokémon Emerald and I have some questions about it that shouldn’t be too hard for a great Pokémon Professor such as yourself! Firstly, what rod should I use to catch Feebas? And secondly, what is the best way to train up my Pokémon below level 100?

Why thank-you! Any rod will work for catching Feebas, but my recommendation is the Old Rod. That way, you’ll only be able to catch Magikarp or Feebas and escaping/beating those pesky Magikarp (that you’re going to be seeing an awful lot of) will be that much simpler. As for training, you’ll have to bear in mind that the power of legendary monsters tends to come at a price. More specifically, levelling them up will take substantially longer than most other monsters. The Elite Four is your best bet for experience in Emerald – it takes time, sure, but with some clever Exp Share usage you should be able to take your team to the top of their game in a matter of hours. Also, don’t be afraid to use Rare Candies. As long as your team sees plenty of battle, the negative effects that some people seem to claim Candies give (such as lowering stats) simply won’t show themselves. So what are you waiting for? Get to work!

Let Sleeping Dogs Lie

Dear Professor Yew,
I’m a big fan of Pokémon World and would like you to answer this question. My friend has the three legendary dogs and I can’t beat him! My team is Pupitar, Tyranitar, Jumpluff, Vaporeon and Mewtwo and my friend James uses Raikou, Entei, Suicune and Aerodactyl. Please help!

Hello Nick, there are two immediate concerns. Firstly, Pupitar (and any Pokémon that aren’t at their highest evolutions) shouldn’t be used competitively, especially with Tyranitar in your line-up as well. And secondly, you’re a monster short! Those dogs pack a punch, but they can be beaten. Try unique Pokémon like Shuckle and Shedinja to make your opponent think, or use Status Ailments common among Grass types to make his life harder. Your Vaporeon should be able to punish both Aerodactyl and Entei, but you should also think about using a fully evolved starter – they get seriously powerful! Failing that, a quick monster with Double Team and Swords Dance (perhaps Scyther) should be able to bulk itself up without too much harm before unleashing massive damage!

I love your magazine and thought you would be the person to bring my problems to. Please tell me what a Nintendo Event is – do they ever happen in the UK? Also, I was wondering who is the most powerful out of Mewtwo and Deoxys? Please say Deoxys! Please! Thanks for your time.

Hi Yasmin, every so often, Nintendo will organise a tour where new content for the Pokémon games is made available, usually in conjunction with publicity for a new product. Unfortunately for people like yourself in the South, these tours don’t tend to get around that much outside of major cities. Still, as I seem to be saying a lot this month, keep informed with where the events will be with Pokémon World. As for your other question, it’s a tough one to call. I think I’d have to give it to Deoxys, simply down to the versatility of its three different forms. I still wouldn’t want to pick a fight with Mewtwo, though…

In The Shadows

Dear Professor Yew,
I have been playing LeafGreen for some time now and I’ve heard that you can catch Lapras in Icefall Cave on Four Island. I have ventured as far as I can, but not a sausage! What do I do? I also really want to know how to get an Umbreon and an Espeon. I tried breeding an Eevee and a Ditto but I got another Eevee! What do I have to do?

Greetings Natalia, just keep at it! Lapras do appear in Icefall Cave occasionally, but they’re extremely rare. Also, you could always just talk to the Silph Co. employee in the same room in the building where you fight Gary – he’ll give you one free of charge if there’s a free space in your party! As for your evolutionary query, I’ve got some bad news for you, I’m afraid. In LeafGreen and FireRed there’s no way to evolve Eevee into its Dark or Psychic variants. It is, however, possible in Pokémon Emerald depending on Eevee’s happiness and the time of day that it first levels up at full happiness. You could always trade for one – given that you can breed Eevees easily (as you seem to have found!), someone with a copy of Emerald is sure to be able to get you an Espeon and an Umbreon. Trainers are nice like that – at least, in my experience…
